Here are 5 interesting facts about Roberto Clemente:
• He started his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. Before joining the Pirates, Clemente signed with a Dodgers scout and played for their minor league affiliate in Montreal in 1954. Because of an old Major League rule regarding high signing bonuses, the Dodgers could not hide him in the minors, and Pittsburgh drafted him.
• He made history as the first Latin American Hall of Famer. Following his tragic death in a 1972 plane crash while delivering earthquake relief to Nicaragua, the Baseball Hall of Fame waived its mandatory five-year waiting period to induct him in 1973.
• Roberto collected exactly 3,000 hits on his final career at-bat. On September 30, 1972, Clemente hit a double off Mets pitcher Jon Matlack for the final regular-season hit of his career, joining the exclusive 3,000-hit club just before his death.
• He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Clemente fulfilled his military service requirements in the off-seasons between 1958 and 1964, spending six months on active duty and earning induction into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
• Roberto won 12 consecutive Gold Glove Awards. Famed for having one of the most powerful and accurate throwing arms in baseball history, he dominated right field defense year after year.
